LONDON — A US Marine Corps F/A-18 has crashed in a field near the Royal Air Force Lakenheath base in eastern England, killing the pilot.

The accident in an agricultural area known as the Fens happened soon after take-off from the base, which is about five miles from the crash site.

The aircraft is reported as being one of a group of four USN Super Hornets returning to the US from duties in the Middle East. No further details are known at this time.

Lakenheath is home to the US Air Force's 48th Fighter Wing.
